Asia Institute, University of Melbourne

Dr Tok joined the Asia Institute in May 2012 and is an expert on China. His research interests spans across the Asia-Pacific region, and include:

 

  • China’s foreign relations, policy discourses, State-Party relations, central-local relations, nationalism and identity, politics in Taiwan and Hong Kong, elite politics and leadership succession.
  • East Asia’s regional institutions and approaches to regionalism, the role of informal diplomacy.
  • Southeast Asia’s internal politics and external relations, peace and conflict resolution mechanisms, politics of regionalism, role of great powers.
  • International relations theory, new media and nationalism.

Mr Matthew Brent

Austrade Trade Commissioner, Beijing

Matthew Brent is a Trade Commissioner for the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, based at the Australian Embassy in Beijing. Matthew is responsible for food & beverage and agribusiness, and leads Austrade’s marketing team in China.

With previous experience at an equipment supplier as international business development manager, and as an export advisor for the Australian Industry Group, Matthew has had exposure to international trade at the business, industry and government levels. Before joining Austrade, Matthew was a director of a China focused consultancy business.
