Peter Duncan @ Hassell Studio

Peter Duncan is a past chairman of HASSELL, an Australian design practice with 14 studios in Australia, China, South East Asia and the United Kingdom. Peter has lived in Hong Kong and Shanghai since 1990 and led the expansion of the practice in China, having first travelled in the country in the mid-1980s.

As an urbanist with authoritive insight and experience, he has been immersed in the practice of urban design, architecture and city making in China and beyond. He lectured in Hong Kong University from 1997 to 2003, and was recognized in “Asia’s top 50 business leaders” in the 2009 Advance Global Australians Summit. He has appeared on ABC News, Bloomberg TV, ChannelNewsAsia and been featured in the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, South China Morning Post, Straits Times on topics from urban city making to activity based workplace.

HASSELL’s China business has studios in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Chongqing with over 260 professional staff, undertaking an extensive range of projects across major and smaller cities. HASSELL is a Founding Member of the Australian Green Building Council and the China Green Building Council.

Among its key projects, HASSELL designed the China headquarters of Alibaba Group in Hangzhou and Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong, and is also the master planner for Ningbo New City. The projects that HASSELL have designed in China are increasingly recognised as landmarks in various cities.

David Keir @ Freedom Road Travel

David Keir is an entrepreneur and business advisor with over 20 years of experience in China building companies and guiding international investors on strategy.

He is founder and CEO of Freedom Road Travel, a China based travel agency specializing in experiential travel for corporate and individual clients. The company, which has offices in Shanghai, Sydney and Taipei, is the first wholly Australian owned travel agency in China.

David is also Vice Chairman of Dash Brands, a Shanghai based quick service restaurant company based in Shanghai, that he founded in 2006. Dash Brands now has Master Franchise rights for Domino’s Pizza in eastern and northern China, with more than 75 Domino’s restaurants open and growing rapidly.

David led the business on the ground in China during its formative years, from 2006 until 2011. He also introduced key brand partners such as Subway and Domino’s, as well as Macquarie Capital as cornerstone investor in 2012. The company built Subway in Shanghai to more than 50 stores, including 20 franchisees in a highly successful operation.

Previously, David was Subway Development Agent in Beijing in 2005 and 2006, where he demonstrated his ability to turn around businesses and set global standards of operation in the China market.

Prior to this Subway role, David worked in corporate finance with Deloitte in Beijing for four years. In this role, he advised numerous multinational companies on their inbound investment strategies. He also worked for an Australian owned property investment company, Dennis Family Corporation, in Wuhan in 2003 and 2004.

David was Chairman of the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai from 2010 to 2012, a period during which membership and revenues grew by 30 per cent to their highest ever levels, and Austcham Greater China was formed. He was also a director of Xin Xing Aid for Street Kids from 2008 to 2011.

David first moved to China in September 1993 as a student at the Beijing Language Institute to study Chinese. He has since lived in Beijing, with periods living in both Hong Kong and Wuhan, before taking up residency in Shanghai in January 2007.

David holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Economics (Honors) from the University of Queensland in Australia, and is also a Chartered Financial Analyst. He lives with his wife, daughter son in Shanghai. David speaks fluent Chinese and is an Australian national.

Kalo Wilson @ Bon App!

Kalo is the Director of Business Development for Bon App, a fast growing F&B tech start-up headquartered in Shanghai employing local and international staff. Bon App is the most popular bi-lingual food app in Shanghai.

Kalo spent 11 years working with the world’s largest IT organisations providing ongoing end-to-end project and process management for the largest enterprise clients nationally including Telstra, Australia Post and AGL and was a key member of the team which won the Microsoft Partner of the Year award 5x over that period. After relocating to China 2 years ago he helped found Bon App.
