Melbourne | Mike Smith: Building an Asia-capable workforce

A full house of ACYPI and Asialink Business members were fortunate to hear reflections from ANZ Chief Executive Officer Mike Smith on leading a business through the wave of Asian growth, and the qualities each of us needs to develop our own Asia capabilities. ANZ hosted this special event at its Institutional Bank headquarters in Melbourne.

Mike spoke of his own career journey across the UK, Asia, Africa, South America and Australia, and the changes he has initiated at ANZ to develop a company with an international culture and super regional strategy. ANZ is now one of Asia’s major corporate banks, and Greater China is one of ANZ’s most important markets. Mike spoke to ACYPI not only about his views on the economic reform agenda of Chinese President Xi Jinping and China’s shadow banking sector, but also the importance that he places on curiosity when hiring someone at ANZ, and the value for young people of living in Asia or learning an Asian language.

Mike Smith was previously Chair of the Asialink Taskforce for an Asia Capable Workforce. ACYPI members can read the 11 Critical Capabilities for business success in and with Asia that the taskforce recommended here: http://asialink.unimelb.edu.au/asialink_business/asialink_taskforce

ACYPI would like to thank Matt Boss (ANZ’s ?Managing Director, Retail Products & Marketing) for interviewing Mike, and Christopher Shields (ANZ’s Head of International & Growth Segment Marketing) for sponsoring the event.
